Disease risk such as Asthma

As per the Harvard study it is discovered that chemicals commonly used for flavoring e-cigarettes may harm lungs first line of defense contrary to allergens and dirt, possibly developing the risk of diseases like asthma.

Scientists established that two chemicals, 2, 3-pentanedione and diacetyl are affecting the work of antennae like protuberances that are existing on 50-75% of cells lining human airways.

Antennae like protrusions are playing the major role in keeping human airway clear of dirt and mucus and helps people to breathe without irritation and easily.

How is it affecting the lungs?

Functioning of impaired cilia is connected with lung diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

An associate lecturer, Quan Lu at Harvard University in the US commented that “Even though chemicals used to flavor e-cigarettes are constantly used, little is been known about the procedure of how chemical flavorings are affecting health”.

Quan Lu claims that “The new study recommends that flavoring chemicals may hurt cilia first line of protection in the lungs by changing gene expression associated with the function and production of cilia”.

Testing of the chemical available in 90% of e-cigarettes

As per the study described in journal Scientific reports that the impact of flavoring chemicals in human epithelial cells was observed, are the category that are harming the lungs.

Scientists have discovered that the flavoring chemicals 2,3-pentanedione and diacetyl are available in about 90% of the e-cigarettes tested.

Diacetyl are commonly used as flavoring agent in foods like butter-flavored baked  goods, candy and microwave popcorn.

Can be harmful on inhaling

 Even though it is the safest constituent in foods, proof recommends that Diacetyl can be hazardous after inhaling.

It was formerly linked with bronchiolitis obliterans, a devastating lung disease that was named “popcorn lung” as it primarily observed in workers who breathe in artificial butter flavored microwave popcorn facilities of processing.

After the connection between popcorn lung and diacetyl described that 2,3-pentanedione was used as the alternative.

For inhalation safety flavors were never tested

Additionally, researchers discovered that less hazardous chemicals are impacting gene expression, signifying that the ethics for safe exposure of these chemicals for workers are not satisfactory.

As per the research it is claimed that there are no ethics for the users of e-cigarette.

Allen commented that “Users of e-cigarette are inhaling and heating flavoring chemicals that were never verified for inhalation safety”.
