Delta Variant Causes Massive Surge in NY Covid Cases

New York’s Covid -19 positivity rate is hovering around 3 percent, with hospitalizations continuing to rise. According to statistics released Saturday by Gov. Cuomo, the statewide rate, when measured on a seven-day average, was 3.12 % on Friday.

The rate in New York City was 2.55%. Of the 169,716 test results that came back statewide Friday, 4,990 or 2.94% were positive. There were 1,978 people hospitalized with the virus Friday and 18 Covid -19 deaths, including seven among New York City residents.The state gave out 54,431 doses of the Covid -19 vaccine from Friday to Saturday, bringing the total number of doses to 23,187,384. Cuomo said that a total of 78.3% of New York adults had received at least one shot of the vaccine, and 70.4% have completed the vaccine series.

New York ranked 40th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week, coronavirus cases in the United States increased 12.7% from the week before, with 1,031,057 cases reported. With 5.84% of the country’s population, New York had 3.08% of the country’s cases in the last week. Across the country, 44 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

The latest cases overall were Kings County, with 4,450 cases; Queens County, with 3,519 cases; and Suffolk County, with 3,264. Weekly case counts rose in 49 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week’s pace were in Suffolk, Nassau, and Erie counties.
