Since 1996, Mercedes-Benz has been the supplier of safety cars for the FIA Formula One World Championship. This year, it will change, the Mercedes-AMG will remain a part of the new safety and medical cars.
Aston Martin will be the safety and medical cars supplier for the 2021 season, breaking the decades-long tradition. The Aston Martin Vantage will be the Formula 1 safety car this year. The DBX, the carmaker’s first SUV, will be the medical car. Both these cars are powered by the same twin-turbocharged 4.0 liter Mercedes-AMG M177 V8 engine.
Both the Aston Martins, Vantage and DBX, will feature the Racing Green team color of the Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One Team. The body of these cars will have light green accents with specific modifications to suit their purpose. The vehicles will have roof-mounted LED light-bar and the FIA markings. Aerodynamics and chassis improvements have also been made. The DBX has 632 liters of boot space to carry the medical team’s safety equipment.
From 12th to 14th March 2021, the Aston Martin Vantage and DBX will make their Formula 1 debut. The two AMG-powered vehicles will debut at the three-day pre-season test in Bahrain. Two weeks later, they will join the Formula One World Championship’s opening round at the same track.
From 2015 to 2017, the AMG GT S’s stint was the official car. Later since 2018, the Mercedes-AMG GT R was the official Formula 1 safety car. For the first time in history, the British Luxury Brand Aston Martin is supplying the safety and medical cars for Formula One World Championship.
