Kale is a popular green food product for the health conscious ones recently it has joined the despicable list of 12 fruits and vegetables that contain maximum pesticide residues, according to the Environmental Working Group. In the year of 2009 kale ranked eighth in the list. The top numbers were of Strawberries and spinach and followed by kale.
Since 2004, a group is yearly ranking the amount of pesticide present in popular fruits and vegetables for its Shopper’s Guide. Pesticides are chemicals that kill unwanted insects, plants, mold and similar harmful insects. The chemicals help protect the produce and keep pests away from human diet.
Few of the top 15 test conducted are “Dirty Dozen” and “Clean Fifteen,” that harvest contaminated with the smallest amounts of pesticide. These are from 40,900 fruit and vegetable by the Food and Drug Administration and the United States Department of Agriculture. The amount and type of pesticides used may differ based on the weather and pests. A recent market study showed that 70% of the products sold contained pesticide residues.
Pesticides are used to ensure that fruits and vegetables are not effected during the growth process and can often be harmful to the humans. The risk of cancer and fertility issues is high with consumption of pesticides. Consumption and exposure of pesticides is high for those living near the farms and is mainly through diet.
In a statement Teresa thorne, the executive director of the Alliance for food and farming, mentioned that fear should not be a part of the food buying process. She mentioned in a previous study that consuming organic food products does not reduce the consumer risk of eating organic products.

Among these the food products kale and spinach have 1.1 to 1.8 times have more amount of pesticides. The list depends on the use of pesticide in agriculture.
