Spencer’s Retail Limited, is a part of RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, and is a multi-format retailer. Spencer is known to provide a wide range of high-quality products that come across various categories like food, fashion, electric and electronics, home, personal care and so on.
Spencer was one of the first entrants in the retail market sector and had introduced the concept of organized retailing to the Indian consumers. It was the first hypermarket in India and was launched in Hyderabad in 2000. As of now there are 120 Spencer stores, across 35 cities in India.
Recently the company roped in Devendra Chawla as the new managing director and CEO, this post was lying vacant for a period of more than two years.
Devendra Chawla is 45 years old and was the Chief Operating Officer of Walmart India at his last role, he is expected to take charge next month, as reported by two senior industry executives. His main job responsibilities would include to expedite the business of Spencer’s Retail and make the expansion into apparels segment profitable. Spencer’s is set to provide a private label business ‘2Bme’, and would be available at standalone stores.
This announcement came just on the point, when Spencer’s Retail segment is getting listed as a unique entity in the stock market last Friday after the demerger with CESC. Chawla is expected to be based in the Kolkata headquarters and operate out from there. Though company officials were not available to comment on the same and neither was Mr. Devendra Chawla.
The highest post of Spencers Retail was vacant since July 2016, when the then MD, Mohit Kampani had moved out and decided to join the Aditya Birla Retail food industry sector. Prior to this stint, Devendra Chawla is said to have passed from Harvard Business School and had been working with Walmart India for last 15 months. With Walmart he was the executive VP and COO responsible for handling the marketing, procurement and omni-channel along with merchandising for the company.
